Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to commonly asked mixing and mastering questions.
What is mastering and why do I need it?
Mastering is the final polish step that makes your track sound balanced, loud, and professional across all playback systems — speakers, headphones, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Without mastering, your track may sound great in your headphones but fall flat on streaming platforms. We master to industry loudness standards (LUFS) for Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and more.
What’s the difference between mixing and mastering?
Mixing is the process of blending all your individual tracks — vocals, instruments, drums, 808s — into a cohesive, balanced stereo file. Mastering takes that finished stereo mix and optimizes it for loudness, clarity, and consistency across all playback platforms. Most artists need both for a release-ready song.
How do I place an order for mixing and mastering?
It’s simple — scroll to the Services section on our homepage, select your service (Mixing & Mastering Bundle, Mixing Only, Mastering Only, Podcast/Commercial, or Audio Restoration), complete the order form, and submit your files. You’ll receive a confirmation and your finished audio back within 1–5 business days.
How do I send my files after placing an order?
After completing the order form and checkout, you’ll receive instructions for file submission. We accept file transfers via Google Drive, Dropbox, or WeTransfer — whichever is easiest for you.
How much does professional mixing and mastering cost?
Our Mixing & Mastering Bundle starts at $125 per song — that includes mixing, mastering, free Auto-Tune, background noise cleanup, and 3 free revisions. Mixing Only is $90/song, Mastering Only is $50/song, and Podcast/Commercial projects are $100 per project. No hidden fees, ever.
What file formats do you accept for mixing and mastering?
We accept WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files. For best results, submit your stems or vocals as 24-bit WAV files at 44.1kHz or higher. If you’re not sure how to export stems from your DAW, just contact us and we’ll walk you through it.
How many revisions do I get?
Every order includes 3 free revision rounds. If you’re not happy with the mix or master after listening back, just tell us what to adjust and we’ll revise it — no extra charge. Our goal is that you’re 100% satisfied with the final result.
What’s included in the Mixing & Mastering Bundle?
The bundle includes full professional mixing, mastering, free Auto-Tune correction, background noise and artifact cleanup, and 3 free revision rounds. It’s the most popular option for independent hip-hop and pop artists who want a release-ready, streaming-optimized master.
Is 46 Kilohertz Records a legitimate mixing and mastering service?
Yes — 46 Kilohertz Records LLC is a US-based professional mixing and mastering company serving independent and major artists. You can read real reviews from clients on SoundBetter and see before/after audio samples directly on our website. Every project is handled by a professional engineer.
Do you master for streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music?
Yes. All masters are delivered to streaming-optimized loudness standards. We target the appropriate integrated LUFS levels for Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and other major platforms so your track doesn’t get turned down or distorted on any service.
How long does mixing and mastering take?
Standard turnaround is 1–3 business days depending on the complexity of the project.
Do you work with independent hip-hop and rap artists?
Yes — hip-hop and rap are our primary specialties. We work with independent artists on mixtapes, singles, EPs, and albums. We’ve mixed and mastered tracks for artists like Emma Constance, Jay1ne, Cylencer, and Jamil Holloway.
Can you fix bad recordings or remove background noise?
Yes — our Audio Restoration & Vocal Clean-Up service removes background noise, hiss, hum, reverb, and other artifacts from vocals and recordings. It’s $50 per song and pairs well with any mixing or mastering service.
What if I’m not happy with the results?
We offer a satisfaction guarantee. If your mix isn’t noticeably better than what you started with, we’ll redo it free of charge. We don’t deserve your money if we can’t deliver results.
Do you offer mixing and mastering for podcasts and commercials?
Yes. Our Podcast, Advertisement & Commercial Audio Mixing and Mastering package is $100 per project and delivers polished, broadcast-ready audio for podcasts, ads, and branded content. Turnaround is within 48 hours.
What software and plugins do you use for mixing and mastering?
We use industry-standard professional tools including Universal Audio, iZotope, FabFilter, SSL, Neve, Waves, Slate Digital, and more. All work is done by a US-based engineer — not outsourced, not automated.
Can I hear examples of your mixing and mastering work before ordering?
Absolutely. Scroll up to the Samples section to hear before-and-after comparisons from real client projects. You’ll hear exactly what to expect before spending a dollar.
